‘It’s Chile Out There’ explores the inside outside theme juxtaposing the artist by a giant cactus in the Chile desert with rag doll cowboys, a dressing gown-clad ventriloquist dummy with indoor cacti in neo-Greek urns, a bonnet clad rag doll and an inverted, androgynous, rag doll with ET overtones. The golden (Yellow Ochre Deep) textured background and purple (Amethyst) shadows secure the painting’s status as landscape with a slightly eerie, figurative yet abstract, narrative yet surreal, humorous yet ironic, whimsical and charming composition. The interface between life and non-life is accentuated by emphasising the aura of the dolls in contrast to the slightly awkward stance of the human.
